It is used by bassists as well due to the Big Muff’s squeaky frequency response. I wanted to come out with a three knob distortion unit in a bigger box. I asked my buddy, Bell Labs designer, Bob Myer, to design a unit, one that would have a lot of sustain. When I got the prototype from Bob, I loved the long sustain. This was done by cascading the circuit into additional sections, each one clipped by twin diodes. However, when you clip, the tone can be a bit raspy. So, I spent a couple of days changing capacitors to roll off distortion in the highs, and eventually found that the best long sustaining tone that was a sweet violin-like sound was done by having three capacitors in different parts of the circuit rolling off the rasp.

Lee Hazelwood was an early pioneer of fuzz tone, it seems he had a fuzz box created by a radio station technician for use in the recording studio. This is one of the first instances of an electronic circuit being used to create a fuzz tone. Also recorded in was Marty Robbins track “Don’t Worry”, though it wasnt relaesed until January A faulty preamp on the console caused Grady Martin’s 6 string bass solo to come out very fuzzy.
The recording engineer was Glen Snoddy, he soon devised a way to replicate the sound with a transistor circuit and pitched it to Gibson. This would go on to become the Gibson Maestro Fuzztone.

There are very few websites dedicated to the Big Muff Pi, so I created this site with all of the information and history I have gleaned from various sources over the years, including some good photo references pix from my collection, stolen from ebay auctions, and sent to me by other generous Big Muff owners and audio clips.
I think it is the most comprehensive one on the web. I have tried to sort out Muff fact from Muff fiction and clarify some confusing or contradictory details from other websites and articles, as well as include a comprehensive history about Electro-Harmonix and the story behind the origin of the Big Muff Pi for all you Muff junkies. I have a confession. In fact, I can honestly say I hated and despised the sound of fuzzes that I had heard. A fuzz tone after all, sounded nothing like an electric guitar should. For those older friends of mine that were players that grew up on Hendrix or Clapton — those seemed to be their favorite particular tones. And there are countless other examples of really unique fuzz tones on record that go to fuzz extremes that are just wonderful examples of sonic colors.
I listen to it now with a smile on my face. Not all fuzz use was so extreme in its tonal results. There are many countless examples of recorded tracks through time that used vintage fuzz boxes that sounded great by traditional standards of thought. You can go back to the Beatles or move forward to contemporary groups like U2, Radiohead and a myriad of others to find great examples of fuzz use. In the end, variety is the great spice of life. Imagine if each of us was so close-minded as I was back in the early days with my thought that solely thinking that a humbucker-equipped guitar straight into a Marshall was the only good tone available — what a boring world we would live in!
Fuzz, in comparison to overdrive or distortion effects can best be described as a hard-clipping effect where in its most simple form is a type of distortion created by two or more simple transistors. A fuzz loaded with germanium transistors will be capable of a varying degree of frequency response and gain.

can some one help me date this big muff? i’ve had it since ’87 or ‘ is it Your pedal looks mids but I would need enclosure and closer.
They all need to serve a purpose, wether its for practice, stage or recording. Years ago I started out with a Korg A4, which had some pretty nice tones but the internal memory kept erasing my presets so I eventually replaced it with a Boss GT3. This was my main effect unit for years when I portrayed David Gilmour in a local Pink Floyd tribute act.
Some pedals, like the Electric Mistress, has always been with me and while I often swap around the overdrives and distortions, the collection or type of pedals has been fairly consistent over the years. Coming from the Floyd tribute, my boards was very much inspired by David Gilmour during the first Airbag albums. My stageboard is custom designed by Custom Pedalboards , with a flat mounting surface and a tier for the back row pedals. One of my biggest influences tone-wise, is Zakk Wylde.
The Dunlop Rotovibe has always been an important part of his tone and personally I prefer this one over a UniVibe. It just blends better with high gain pedals and I often use the expression pedal to create wild tremolo effects during a solo or ambient part. The signal then travel back to the board and into the Effectrode PC-2A tube compressor.
